L-1 Visa: Intracompany Transferee Explained

The L-1 Intracompany Transferee Visa allows companies to transfer key employees from their foreign offices to the United States.

L-1A vs L-1B

  • L-1A: For managers and executives. Valid for up to 7 years.
  • L-1B: For employees with specialized knowledge. Valid for up to 5 years.

Requirements

  1. You must have worked for the foreign company for at least 1 continuous year within the past 3 years.
  2. You must be transferring to a US office of the same company (parent, subsidiary, affiliate, or branch).
  3. You must be coming to the US in a managerial, executive, or specialized knowledge capacity.

Advantages

  • No annual cap on L-1 visas
  • Dual intent visa (can pursue green card)
  • Spouses (L-2) can work in the US with EAD
  • Faster processing than H-1B in many cases
